Coricraft Transforms Textile Processing with the Zünd G3 L-2500 Digital Cutter
Coricraft, a leading furniture manufacturer, has transformed its textile production processes at its Cape Town factory by implementing an advanced, turn-key solution from Midcomp. This state-of-the-art installation, which features a Zünd G3 L-2500 cutting system, a high-resolution Canon camera, and intelligent MindCUT software, is the first of its kind in the southern hemisphere and among only a few globally.
A Legacy of Craftsmanship
Founded in 1995, Coricraft has evolved from a single Cape Town store into a network of 42 stores across South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. Known for its handcrafted furniture, every Coricraft couch is built from scratch and upholstered in premium fabric or genuine leather by a skilled team of artisans.
Meeting Industry Trends with Advanced Technology
As the textile processing industry shifts toward digital production, trends like mass customisation and fast fashion are driving demand for shorter order cycles and higher personalization. Coricraft’s latest investment in the Zünd G3 L-2500 positions the company to meet these demands efficiently. The digital cutting system enables the processing of custom-printed patterned textiles, supporting the industry’s growing need for flexibility and precision.
A Fully Automated Workflow
The Zünd G3 L-2500 system offers a fully automated, streamlined workflow. Equipped with front and back extension tables, a textile cradle feeder, a high-resolution Canon camera, projectors, and a lighting hood, the solution simplifies complex processes like pattern matching and prototyping. Previously handled manually, these tasks are now faster and more precise.
Textile processing begins with automated material feeding by the Zünd system. The Canon camera captures the fabric’s details, including patterns and dimensions, regardless of whether the material is plain or printed. MindCUT software then optimises material usage by nesting parts closely, generating cutting markers, and directing high-performance tools for precise cuts. A vacuum system ensures fabric stability during cutting, while the system projects color-coded data to aid operators in sorting and picking.
Efficiency Gains and Expert Consultation
According to Navin Jeewanlall, Director at Midcomp, the partnership with Coricraft began with a detailed consultation at the Epping factory. “We assessed every step of the workflow, from design and prototyping to production and delivery,” Jeewanlall explained.
Midcomp tested five fabric types provided by Coricraft, sending them to Zünd in Switzerland to verify the compatibility of the camera and software. The results confirmed that the Zünd system, combined with MindCUT software, could seamlessly handle Coricraft’s materials.
A standout feature of the solution is its ability to achieve flawless pattern matching, even with intricate designs. Jeewanlall highlighted the system’s speed: “Previously, it took two hours to manually nest and cut fabric for a couch. Now, with the Zünd system, we can nest and cut a 12-meter marker with 35 parts in just nine minutes.”
Transforming Textile Processing
Wynand van Dyk, Production Executive at Coricraft, emphasized the transformative impact of the new solution: “This technology has enabled us to automate many manual functions, such as pattern matching. With the scarcity of skilled trades, we now rely on technology to maintain our unique furniture designs. The ability to electronically match and cut decorator fabric is an industry first.”
Van Dyk also highlighted how the system supports Coricraft’s made-to-order (MTO) model. “With this textile processing technology, we can efficiently meet the demand for custom-printed textiles, accommodating single-job requests with ease,” he said.
A Partnership Built on Expertise
Coricraft’s long-standing relationship with Midcomp has been a key factor in the project’s success. “I’ve worked with Midcomp for over 25 years and can’t speak highly enough of their expertise and service,” said van Dyk.
A Global Perspective
Rolf Köppel, Segment Manager for Textiles at Zünd Systemtechnik, underscored the broader implications of digital technology in the textile industry: “Our Pattern Matching feature revolutionises precision fabric cutting by automatically recognizing intricate patterns and making real-time adjustments. This speeds up production without sacrificing accuracy.”
Köppel added that digital advancements like the Mind Software Suite allow manufacturers to adapt to increasing market demands. “By automating textile processing such as material capturing, marker creation, and part removal, manufacturers can streamline workflows and respond to shorter product lifecycles,” he noted.
Conclusion
Coricraft’s investment in the Midcomp turn-key solution exemplifies how innovation can transform traditional industries. By embracing cutting-edge technology, the company is not only meeting modern market demands but also preserving its legacy of quality craftsmanship.
