Custom African Print Apparel Manufacturer Invests In Dye-Sublimation Printer From Midcomp
Chepa Corporate Services Enhances Operations with Midcomp’s HP Stitch S500 Printer & Pay Per Use Programme
Chepa Corporate Services recently upgraded its creative possibilities with the installation of an HP Stitch S500 dye-sublimation printer, supplied by Midcomp. The company also opted for Midcomp’s innovative Pay Per Use (PPU) programme, offering cost savings and operational peace of mind.
A Comprehensive Dye-Sublimation Solution
The HP Stitch S500 is a versatile, all-in-one dye-sublimation printer capable of producing exceptional results on both transfer paper and fabric. Featuring 2 x CMYK user-replaceable printheads, the printer ensures reliable image quality with automatic compensation for up to 30% of nozzles being out. It also enables users to double their unattended printing capacity without requiring additional production space.
In addition, the HP PrintOS platform allows for efficient fleet management, enabling users to remotely monitor printer status, ink levels, and substrate usage.
Chepa’s Journey to Customisation
Dumi Mahlangu, founder and managing director of Chepa Corporate Services, reflected on the company’s growth since its inception. “I started manufacturing custom African print apparel for the retail industry seven years ago. Over time, we expanded into B2B services.”
With the HP Stitch S500, Chepa Corporate Services introduced new customisation options, including golf shirts and jackets. These items are tailored to each client’s corporate identity, reimagined through Chepa’s unique design lens.
Previously, outsourcing printing led to challenges with quality control, color accuracy, and lengthy back-and-forth consultations with service providers. Mahlangu noted that bringing production in-house resolved these issues. “The printer ensures we get colors right, improves lead times, and lets us experiment with various fabric bases while offering clients innovative products.”
The ability to sublimate panels before assembling garments has also streamlined production, enabling faster and more efficient output. “It’s faster than I expected,” Mahlangu added. “We’re now able to print and produce significantly more in less time.”
Exploring New Markets
The S500 has enabled Chepa Corporate Services to diversify its offerings. The company is expanding its B2B services and its women’s clothing range, using soft, delicate fabrics like satin, silk, and polyester blends.
Additionally, the company is exploring the athleisure and sportswear markets with custom prints that stand out in the industry. “Our prints are unique because no one else designs like we do,” Mahlangu said.
Chepa is also venturing into accessories, such as scarves and custom bags, which were previously difficult to produce on harder cotton bases. The HP Stitch S500 allows for softer, high-quality finishes that resonate with both retail and B2B clients.
Industry Trends and Localisation
Mahlangu highlighted a growing trend among fashion designers to create custom prints in-house, enabling them to differentiate their brands. “Top designers are investing in textile printers to design unique prints that reflect their identity, customer base, and brand ethos. This exclusivity is in high demand.”
He added that localising production adds value for clients. “When customers see the journey their garments take—from printing to quality control and delivery—they appreciate the effort. Having an in-house supply chain is slightly more expensive but creates a stronger connection with our clients.”
Digital printing has proven transformative for designers and creators, offering unparalleled customisation. “It allows you to own your creative vision and intellectual property, producing exactly what you envision. This sets you apart in the market,” Mahlangu explained.
Exceptional Service and Support
Mahlangu praised Midcomp’s support, describing it as “fabulous.” He recalled working with Midcomp director Navin Jeewanlall, who provided guidance during the early stages of Chepa’s sublimation journey. “Midcomp’s seamless process, technical knowledge, and complementary machine recommendations have been invaluable to our growth.”
The Pay Per Use Advantage
Midcomp’s PPU programme has been instrumental in Chepa’s success, providing an accurate cost-per-square-metre calculation and financial predictability. Mahlangu highlighted the convenience of having consumables readily available without upfront cash flow challenges.
“The programme ensures my service, labor, travel, parts, and printheads are covered. It’s a brilliant solution that gives me confidence that any issues will be resolved without financial strain.”
A Vision for Growth
Navin Jeewanlall expressed his admiration for Chepa Corporate Services. “It’s been a pleasure partnering with Dumi and his team. His creativity and entrepreneurial spirit are inspiring, and we look forward to supporting their growth.”
Jeewanlall emphasized the proven reliability of HP Stitch printers, which continue to perform across multiple industries. “These printers are workhorses, delivering consistent, high-quality results. Paired with our PPU programme, they provide businesses with peace of mind and exceptional value.”
As Chepa Corporate Services continues to innovate and expand, the HP Stitch S500 and Midcomp’s support are central to its vision of delivering bespoke, high-quality products that stand out in the market.
